You spent hours writing the perfect email. You crafted a compelling subject line. You hit send — and then nothing. No opens. No clicks. No replies. Your email went straight to spam and your subscribers never even saw it.

This is one of the most frustrating experiences in email marketing. And the worst part? It's happening to thousands of Nigerian businesses right now — and most of them don't even know it.

After four years of managing email campaigns that have achieved open rates of up to 89%, I've seen every spam problem imaginable. More importantly, I've learned exactly how to fix them. In this article, I'll walk you through the 5 most common reasons emails go to spam — and give you the exact steps to fix each one.

"Getting to the inbox is the foundation of email marketing. You can write the most brilliant email in the world — but if it lands in spam, it might as well not exist."

Understanding Email Deliverability

Before we dive into the specific reasons, let's understand what email deliverability actually means. Deliverability is the ability of your emails to reach your subscribers' inboxes rather than their spam folders. It's determined by a combination of technical factors, your sending reputation, and the content of your emails.

Email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook use complex algorithms to decide where your email goes. They look at hundreds of signals — from the words in your subject line to the technical authentication of your domain. Understanding these signals is the key to consistently landing in the inbox.

The 5 Reasons Your Emails Are Going to Spam

01

You're Using Spam Trigger Words

Email spam filters are trained to recognise words and phrases commonly used in spam emails. When your email contains these words — especially in the subject line — spam filters flag it immediately.

Common spam trigger words to avoid:

The Fix
Replace promotional language with conversational, benefit-focused language. Instead of "FREE OFFER — Act now!!!" try "Something I thought you'd find useful." Write your subject lines and email copy the way you'd write to a friend — naturally and conversationally.
02

You Haven't Set Up Email Authentication

This is the most technical reason on this list — but also one of the most important. Email authentication is a set of technical standards that prove to email providers that your emails are genuinely coming from you.

There are three key authentication protocols you need:

Without these, email providers have no way to verify you are who you say you are. Gmail now requires proper authentication — emails without it are increasingly sent to spam.

The Fix
Log into your domain registrar (Whogohost) and add SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records to your DNS settings. Your email marketing platform (Mailchimp, Brevo, etc.) provides the exact records you need. This is a one-time setup that dramatically improves deliverability.
03

You Bought an Email List

This is the most dangerous thing you can do in email marketing — and unfortunately it's something many Nigerian businesses do hoping for a quick shortcut to a large audience.

Here's why purchased lists destroy your deliverability:

⚠️ If your domain gets blacklisted, ALL your emails stop reaching inboxes. Recovering from a blacklisting can take weeks or months of significant effort.

The Fix
Always build your list organically. Use opt-in forms on your website, offer a free resource in exchange for an email address, and invite your social media followers to subscribe. An organic list of 500 engaged subscribers will outperform a purchased list of 5,000 every single time.
04

Your List Is Full of Inactive Subscribers

This surprises many people — having a large email list can actually hurt you. Email providers track how your subscribers interact with your emails. If a large percentage never opens, clicks, or engages — providers interpret this as a signal that your emails are unwanted.

Signs your list needs cleaning:

The Fix
Run a re-engagement campaign. Send a specific email to subscribers who haven't opened anything in 3-6 months — "Are you still interested? We want to make sure we're sending content you actually want." Give them a clear option to stay or unsubscribe. Anyone who doesn't engage should be removed. A smaller, engaged list always outperforms a large, inactive one.
05

Your Email Content Is Unbalanced

Spam filters analyse the entire content of your email — not just the subject line. Several content issues trigger filters:

The Fix
Write emails that look like they come from a real person. Use a healthy mix of text and images. Keep links to a minimum — one clear call-to-action per email is ideal. Before sending, use mail-tester.com (free) to check your spam score and fix any issues before you hit send.

Your Email Deliverability Checklist

Before your next campaign, run through this checklist:

✅ If you can check all 10 boxes, your emails are set up for inbox delivery. Most businesses can only check 3 or 4 — which is exactly why their open rates are stuck at 10-15% while my clients are hitting 70-89%.

How Long Does It Take to Fix Email Deliverability?

Most of these fixes can be implemented immediately. Setting up authentication records takes a few hours. Cleaning your list can be done in an afternoon. Rewriting your copy to avoid spam triggers starts with your very next campaign.

However, rebuilding your sender reputation takes time. If your domain has been sending poorly for months, email providers need to see consistent good behaviour before trusting you again. Expect 4-8 weeks of consistently clean sending before you see significant improvement.

The key is to start now. Every email you send with spam problems is further damaging your reputation. Every email you send correctly is rebuilding it.
