When I started my email marketing journey in Lagos, I made the classic beginner mistake: I signed up for Mailchimp because everyone said it was the best. Within three months, I hit their free plan limit. My list had 520 subscribers. Mailchimp wanted me to pay $13 per month — roughly ₦20,000 at the time — just to keep sending emails. For a freelancer with no steady income, that was not happening.
I spent the next two weeks testing every free email marketing tool I could find. Some were terrible. Some were decent but had hidden limits. And one was so good that I have used it for every client since — including my own business — without paying a single naira for the first 2,000 contacts.
In this article, I will share the results of that testing. No affiliate links. No paid partnerships. Just honest recommendations based on what actually works for Nigerian businesses with tight budgets and real growth ambitions.
"The best email marketing tool is not the one with the most features. It is the one you will actually use — the one that fits your budget, your technical skills, and your business goals right now."
What Nigerian Businesses Actually Need From an Email Tool
Before I rank the tools, let me define the criteria. Nigerian businesses face unique challenges that Western-focused tool reviews ignore:
- Naira-friendly payment — when you do upgrade, can you pay with a Nigerian card or Paystack/Flutterwave?
- Reliable delivery to Nigerian inboxes — some tools have poor deliverability to Gmail and Yahoo accounts used by most Nigerians
- Mobile-friendly interface — many Nigerian business owners manage emails from their phones
- Automation on the free plan — welcome sequences and cart abandonment should not require a paid upgrade
- Decent free contact limit — 500 contacts is too small. 2,000+ is realistic for growth
- No forced branding — "Sent with Mailchimp" in your footer looks unprofessional to Nigerian customers
With those criteria in mind, here are my rankings.
1. Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) — My Top Recommendation
Brevo Top Pick
Free plan: Unlimited contacts, 300 emails per day
Paid plans start at: $9/month (~₦14,000)
What makes it special:
- Full automation on the free plan — welcome sequences, cart abandonment, lead scoring, behavioural triggers. Most tools lock automation behind a paywall. Brevo does not.
- Unlimited contacts — you can grow to 10,000 subscribers on the free plan. The limit is daily sends, not list size.
- Excellent deliverability to Nigerian inboxes — I have tested Brevo against five other tools with the same list. Brevo consistently lands in the Primary tab of Gmail and Yahoo.
- Drag-and-drop editor — no coding required. Build professional emails in minutes.
- SMS marketing included — crucial for Nigerian businesses where SMS often outperforms email for urgent messages.
- Accepts Nigerian cards — when you upgrade, you can pay with your GTBank, Access, or Zenith card without stress.
What to watch: The 300 emails-per-day limit means you need to plan sends carefully. For a list of 2,000, you will need to send over 6–7 days or upgrade. But for most small Nigerian businesses, 300 emails per day is plenty.
Best for: E-commerce stores, service businesses, coaches, and anyone who needs automation from day one.
2. MailerLite — Best for Content Creators and Bloggers
MailerLite
Free plan: 1,000 contacts, 12,000 emails per month
Paid plans start at: $9/month (~₦14,000)
What makes it special:
- Beautiful email templates — the best-designed templates of any free tool. Perfect for brands that care about aesthetics.
- Built-in landing pages — create lead capture pages without a website. Great for Instagram-driven businesses.
- Intuitive interface — the easiest tool to learn. If you are not technical, start here.
- Good automation on free plan — welcome sequences, tagging, and basic workflows included.
- 24/7 live chat support — even on the free plan. When you are stuck at midnight in Lagos, someone is there.
What to watch: Automation is more limited than Brevo. You cannot do advanced behavioural triggers like "if subscriber clicks link X, send email Y" on the free plan. Also, Nigerian card payments can be hit-or-miss.
Best for: Bloggers, coaches, personal brands, and anyone who prioritises design and ease of use over advanced automation.
3. Mailchimp — The One to Avoid
Mailchimp
Free plan: 500 contacts, 1,000 emails per month
Paid plans start at: $13/month (~₦20,000)
Why I stopped recommending it:
- Brutal free limits — 500 contacts is tiny. You will outgrow it in weeks, not months.
- No automation on free plan — no welcome sequences, no cart abandonment, no tagging. Just basic broadcast emails. In 2026, that is unacceptable.
- Expensive upgrades — $13/month is steep for a tool that competitors offer cheaper with more features.
- Forced Mailchimp branding — "Sent via Mailchimp" appears in your email footer on the free plan. It screams "small business that cannot afford proper tools."
- Poor Nigerian payment support — many Nigerian cards are declined. You will spend hours trying to pay.
- Complex interface — what used to be simple has become bloated. The learning curve is unnecessary.
When to use it: Only if you are already deeply integrated and cannot migrate. For new businesses, there is no reason to start here in 2026.
4. ConvertKit — Best for Creators With Audiences
ConvertKit
Free plan: 1,000 contacts, unlimited broadcasts
Paid plans start at: $9/month (~₦14,000)
What makes it special:
- Creator-focused features — built-in tip jars, paid newsletters, and audience growth tools. If you monetise content, this is designed for you.
- Excellent automation — visual workflow builder that is more intuitive than Brevo's.
- Tag-based segmentation — organise subscribers by behaviour, not just lists. More flexible for complex strategies.
- No forced branding — your emails look completely professional on the free plan.
What to watch: Fewer e-commerce integrations than Brevo. If you run a Shopify or WooCommerce store, Brevo connects more smoothly. Also, landing page templates are basic compared to MailerLite.
Best for: YouTubers, podcasters, newsletter writers, and anyone building a personal brand around content.
5. Sender — The Hidden Gem for E-commerce
Sender
Free plan: 2,500 contacts, 15,000 emails per month
Paid plans start at: $8/month (~₦12,500)
What makes it special:
- Most generous free plan — 2,500 contacts and 15,000 emails is more than enough for most Nigerian small businesses.
- Full automation included — welcome sequences, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, and post-purchase flows. All free.
- Strong e-commerce integrations — Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, and custom API connections.
- Popup and form builder — capture leads directly on your website without extra tools.
- Affordable upgrades — cheapest paid plan of any tool on this list.
What to watch: The interface is functional but not beautiful. If design matters deeply to your brand, you may find it limiting. Support is email-only on the free plan, which can be frustrating for urgent issues.
Best for: E-commerce stores on tight budgets, dropshippers, and anyone who needs maximum contacts and sends for free.
6. Google Forms + Gmail — The Zero-Budget Hack
Google Forms + Gmail Mail Merge
Free plan: Unlimited (within Gmail sending limits)
Paid plans: None required
What makes it special:
- Completely free — no contact limits, no send limits beyond Gmail's 500 emails per day.
- No learning curve — if you can use Gmail and Google Sheets, you can do this.
- Personal delivery — emails come from your actual Gmail address, which can feel more personal than branded marketing emails.
What to watch: No automation. No analytics. No templates. No list management. You are manually copying and pasting email addresses into BCC fields. This is not scalable. It is a temporary bridge, not a long-term solution.
Best for: Businesses with under 100 subscribers who are not ready to invest time in a proper platform yet. Migrate to Brevo or Sender as soon as you can.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Tool | Free Contacts | Free Sends | Automation | Nigerian Cards | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brevo | Unlimited | 300/day | Full | Yes | All businesses |
| MailerLite | 1,000 | 12,000/mo | Basic | Sometimes | Content creators |
| Mailchimp | 500 | 1,000/mo | None | Poor | Not recommended |
| ConvertKit | 1,000 | Unlimited | Full | Yes | Creators |
| Sender | 2,500 | 15,000/mo | Full | Yes | E-commerce |
| Google Forms | Unlimited | 500/day | None | N/A | Beginners only |
My Recommendation by Business Type
Here is exactly which tool I recommend based on what you do:
- E-commerce store (Shopify/WooCommerce): Brevo or Sender. Both have abandoned cart automation on the free plan. Brevo has better deliverability. Sender has a more generous free allowance.
- Service business (consultant, agency, freelancer): Brevo. The automation and CRM features help you nurture leads from first contact to paid invoice.
- Coach or course creator: ConvertKit. The paid newsletter and tip jar features align with how creators monetise. The visual automation builder is the best in class.
- Blogger or content creator: MailerLite. The landing pages and beautiful templates help you grow your list from your content.
- Personal brand building on Instagram: MailerLite or Brevo. Both have simple form builders you can link from your bio.
- Church, NGO, or community organisation: Brevo. Unlimited contacts means you never worry about outgrowing the free plan.
- Just starting, under 100 subscribers: Brevo. Start with the tool you will grow into, not the tool you will outgrow.
How to Switch Tools Without Losing Subscribers
If you are currently on Mailchimp or another tool and want to switch, here is the migration process I use for clients:
Step 1: Export Your List
- Download your contacts as a CSV file
- Include: email address, first name, signup date, tags, and any custom fields
Step 2: Clean Before You Import
- Remove hard bounces and unsubscribes
- Remove subscribers who have not opened an email in 12 months
- A clean list imports faster and performs better
Step 3: Import to New Tool
- Upload your CSV
- Map fields correctly (first name → first name, email → email)
- Recreate your segments and tags
Step 4: Warm Up Your New Sending Domain
- Send to your most engaged subscribers first (opened in last 30 days)
- Wait 24 hours, then send to the rest
- This tells Gmail and Yahoo that your new domain is legitimate
Step 5: Recreate Your Automations
- Welcome sequence
- Cart abandonment (if applicable)
- Any other active flows
- Test each one before going live
The entire process takes 2–3 hours. The improvement in deliverability, automation, and cost savings is worth every minute.
Tools That Did Not Make the List (and Why)
I tested several other tools that are popular in Western markets but failed my Nigerian business criteria:
- Constant Contact: No free plan at all. Starts at $12/month. Not viable for bootstrapped Nigerian businesses.
- HubSpot: Powerful but overwhelming. The free CRM is excellent, but email marketing is severely limited. Better as a CRM with email as an add-on.
- Klaviyo: The e-commerce email king, but no free plan for lists under 250 contacts. Pricing scales aggressively. Only worth it once you are doing serious revenue.
- Moosend: Good features, but deliverability to Nigerian inboxes was inconsistent in my testing. Bounced more than Brevo or Sender.
- Benchmark: Decent free plan, but automation is locked behind paid plans. Not competitive in 2026.
✅ The tool you choose matters less than how you use it. A business using Brevo with no strategy will be outperformed by a business using Google Forms with a brilliant strategy. Pick a tool, learn it deeply, and focus on writing emails your subscribers actually want to open. That is where the real competition is.
Your Next Step
If you are still using Google Forms, WhatsApp broadcasts, or — worst of all — no email list at all, pick one tool from this list today. Sign up. Import your contacts (or start building your list). Write your first welcome email. Set up your first automation.
Do not overthink the choice. Brevo is my top recommendation for a reason. It works for almost every Nigerian business I have worked with. But if you are a content creator, ConvertKit or MailerLite might fit better. If you are pure e-commerce on the tightest budget, Sender is unbeatable.
The worst decision is no decision. The second-worst decision is staying on a tool that is limiting your growth because switching feels like work. Two hours of migration is nothing compared to months of lost revenue from poor deliverability, missing automation, and forced branding.
Pick your tool. Set it up this week. Start sending next week. Your future customers are waiting.
